Flag desecration is something that we recently discussed in class, so it sparked my interest on the issue.
I was not aware that burning an American flag was legal until a couple years ago. I had always assumed that since the flag represented our country, the police and the government would not want people to destroy it. Personally, I think that flag burning or desecration should be illegal. I just don't understand why anyone who lives in this country and enjoys the liberties we have would want to burn something that represents American sacrifices that have secured our rights.
After doing some research, I discovered that in 1968, 48 of 50 states enacted Flag Protection Acts, but the Supreme Court overturned them because they violated the First Amendment. In recent polls, 63% of Americans said that they did not want to amend the Constitution to prohibit flag desecration.
This is an interesting topic. I think that the American Flag is a symbol of our country and is extremely disrespectful if we burn it. There are other ways of showing your anger. I think that it should be illegal.
ReplyDeleteWow, this is tough. The American flag is our biggest symbol of freedom, burning the flag is possibly the most disrespectful thing you could do. I honestly thought that it was illegal to burn the flag. But the freedom sybolized by the flag includes freedom of speech, so I guess that it only makes sence that it is legal. By the way, we used the same current event!
ReplyDeleteOk, that's wrong... I agree with you so much on this issue and I don't understand why 68% of the people decided against it. I get that everyone has rights and all but if you enjoy your rights and liberties then how can you burn a symbol of it all? It doesn't make sense so I don't understand why people wouldn't be ok with not allowing others to burn the US flag.
ReplyDeleteI think this issue is definitely a controversial one. I agree with Amy that it is freedom of speech and therefore it should be legal but it is a bit unnerving to think that people would be so disappointed in our country that they would want to burn a flag in order to show their disdain. Our country is really one of the greatest in providing opportunity and such so it's upsetting to think that its own people would want to rebel against it.
